If you fancy doing some cycling in Beatrix Potter country, then try this 7.5 mile route from Coniston to Little Langdale in Cumbria. Start your journey at the author’s old home, Yew Tree Farm, and follow the bridleway until you reach tarmac. At this sight of civilisation, turn right and continue for two miles, passing the old quarry.
Follow the road to the left, making your way downhill into the valley until you reach the ford. Cross the ford and follow the lane until you come to a junction; turn right and you will find yourself in Little Langdale. If you fancy some real ale at this point, stop at the Three Shires Inn and try some Old Man Ale.
Once you are ready to return, retrace your pedalling to the ford and take after you have crossed it, take your first right (there is a blue cycle-path sign). After a quarter of a mile, follow the trail past a slate slagheap – don’t fork left.
When you reach the next slagheap, climb uphill and join another track coming from the right. Go through a farmyard and then follow the road to the hamlet of High Tilberthwaite.. Keep going until you reach a path that runs parallel with the A593; follow this and you will come to the bridleway you atarted out on. Simply retrace your steps back to Yew Tree Farm.
